J SCHATZ WELCOMES PROVIDENCE MAYOR JORGE ELORZA FOR A STUDIO TOUR

PROVIDENCE, RI — J Schatz is pleased to welcome Mayor Jorge Elorza for a studio tour on Tuesday, October 4th from 10-11am. The Mayor will be joined by Councilwoman Sabina Matos for a tour of the J Schatz design and production facility in Olneyville, which is a live-work space located at 46 Dike Street in Olneyville.

The Studio
J Schatz, the internationally recognized design and ceramic production studio, relocated from Los Angeles in January of 2016 and purchased a historic mill building in the Olneyville section of Providence, Rhode Island for their new studio and home. Built in 1880, the building was the former dye house for the Weybosset Mills and is on the national register of historic places. The 5,000 sq. ft, one-and-one-half-story rectangular building has windows on both sides that allow natural light into the building throughout the day. It will be an inspiring workspace for the new studio team.

Olneyville and Providence
Providence has a supportive and close-knit design community that is experiencing a renaissance. Mill buildings throughout Olneyville are being converted into working artists spaces. The Providence Department of Planning and Development created the Dike Street Special Area Plan, where the building is located, to foster development, make public realm improvements, and encourage the adaptive reuse of the area’s endangered historic buildings.

J Schatz is very excited about their new home and the possibilities that exist in Providence. They are grateful to the mayor, Jorge Elorza, as well as Bonnie Nickerson and Barry Sullivan from the Department of Planning and Development who have been on the ground with them from day one making sure that their move proceeded smoothly.
